RBI GRADE B EXAM
ABOUT EXAM
RBI Grade B is one of the most significant banking exams conducted across the country.
The RBI Grade B Recruitment is all about selecting the right candidates for the Grade B officers position. To make that possible, the RBI conducts the Grade B exams. Lakhs of aspirants appear for these exams every year.
This makes the RBI Grade B exams one of the toughest and the most competitive government job entrance exams in the nation.
Therefore, to clear the exam would take a lot of hard work, perseverance, and determination on the part of the aspirant.
The exam is essentially divided into 3 Phases.
The first two phases are written exams, whereas the third phase comprises a personal interview round. I have explained more about the same in the sections of the RBI selection procedure and exam pattern given below.
The RBI Grade B Officers are mandated with the task of keeping the nation’s economy stable by creating policies and regulations for Indian Banks, as well as maintaining market prices.
Given the massiveness of the responsibility laden onto an officer's shoulders, it’s only understandable that the RBI Grade B exam is not a piece of cake and should not be taken lightly.
Now, saying that the post of an RBI Grade B Officer is a prestigious one will be an understatement.
Well, obviously the glory of the post is unmeasurable but pay scale and additional bonuses sure are pretty handsome too, might I add.
RBI Grade B openings are published for a variety of posts including- Officers in Grade ‘B’ (DR) – (General), Officers in Grade ‘B’ (DR) – DEPR, and Officers in Grade ‘B’ (DR) – DSIM.
Now a job that appealing, who’d be crazy enough to not fight for it? But it wouldn’t be the easiest of fights out there, actually scrap that, it wouldn’t be easy at all.
JOB PROFILE
An RBI Grade B officer inspects the credit appraisal system of banks, KYC AML guidelines, cash vaults, functioning and the overall security of the branch, and a host of other things.
Getting posted as a Grade B officer is a matter of great prestige. It gives the person an opportunity to work as a dedicated, on-ground operative for the apex bank of India.
The officer’s job profile often involves the task of making sure that banks under his jurisdiction function as per the banking regulations act 1949. This is a great responsibility, as it involves protecting public money and safeguarding the interests of depositors.
Depending on your hard work, there’d also be scope for growth within the framework of the organization.
The Job profile would involve a tenure of up to four years during a period of post-trial supervision. Persons are randomly assigned to departments. Officers with greater work experience might be inducted into the HRD.
Frequent transfers from one division to another are the part and parcel of this job profile.
A segment of Grade B officers might be involved in the policymaking process.
Also, RBI, being the central bank of India, has most of its offices in urban and regional centers instead of the rural ones.
SALARY
The Gross monthly salary after you become an RBI Grade B officer is 77,208/-. It doesn’t mean that the RBI Grade B in-hand salary is 77,2018/-.
Yes, you read it right.
The basic salary of RBI Grade B Officer is Rs. 35,150/ – p.m. in the starting.
As you keep on working in the organization, your basic pay keeps on increasing as well.
Let’s discuss the allowances first and then we will talk about all the increments and promotions together.
RBI Grade B Officer Salary Allowances
There are a lot of allowances provide by RBI to all the officers but I have written them in a very simple language to help you understand.
Dearness Allowance (DA):
You will get a DA of 113% of the basic salary but it has been revised to 125% after the 7 central pay commissions.
House Rent Allowance (HRA):
I know the pain of going out of your hometown to some other city to work. Going away from your parents is difficult but RBI tries to help you out by providing you a home.
HRA is given to the officers who couldn’t get accommodation from RBI because the number of flats is limited.
An RBI Grade B Officer most likely to get a 2/3 BHK home in the city.
In some cases, if someone has been not allocated a flat, RBI gives enough money that you can easily find a satisfactory place to live in a good locality.
Conveyance Allowance (CA):
Conveyance Allowance is basically the transportation cost paid to every RBI Grade B officer from your home to the office every single day.
It depends upon the declaration by you. At the Mumbai center, the amount is an additional Rs. 14000 in hand.
Note: 30 liters of extra petrol is provided to all those living in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, or Bangalore.
Education Allowance:
Not all, but selected officers do receive education allowances for their families as well. The Annual reimbursements of education allowance are up to Rs. 4000/per month.
Medical Allowance:

Leave Fare Concession Travel (LFC):
You will get around Rs. 100000 under the LFC allowance. This can be availed once in two years, by the employee and his dependents to go anywhere in the world.

You can claim up to 150 liters of fuel per month.

You will be offered Rs 3000/- under the maid allowance.

RBI will provide you with Sodexo coupons worth Rs. 2000/- which can be spent on food/groceries.
Briefcase Allowance:
BA is drawn by Grade A and B level officers. You can get a Briefcase allowance of up to Rs. 7000/-. They can reimburse the price of the briefcase every three years as well.
Spectacles Allowance:
Did you want to get expensive spectacles all your lifetime? Well RBI will take care of you. Spectacles allowance of Rs 7000/- can be claimed for either the RBI Grade B officer or the spouse.
Bank Loan Facility:
According to an ongoing 7th central pay commission revision, RBI has announced arrangements for loans in a united way. You can get loans at a very less interest rate for Housing, vehicles, and so on.
Pension:
Pension is a very common thing that every government employee draws after retirement.
Apart from the given perks, there is an Interest-free festival advance, Newspaper, book grant, Furnishing of Residence Allowance, Life Insurance Coverage, and Educational Leaves, etc. as per eligibility.
I believe that you loved all the allowances. RBI does care about its employees and knows how to take care of them.
RBI Grade B Increments (Rs. 1 lakh in 10-15 years)
Let’s jump to the increments given by RBI over the years. I have mentioned the Basic Pay of RBI with the increments in regular time intervals.
-
Initial Basic Pay is Rs. 35150 as mentioned above with a yearly increment of Rs.1750 for 9 years
-
After 9 years, Rs. 50900 is your basic pay and yearly increment of Rs. 1750 for the next two years if you reach the Efficiency Bar (EB)
-
After a total of 11 years, Rs. 54400 is your basic pay and a yearly increment of Rs. 2000 for the next four years
-
Rs. 62400 is the Maximum Basic Pay after 16 years. Guess what. This is without a single promotion. So let’s talk about the promotions now.
RBI Grade B Eligibility 2022 – Educational Qualification
The educational qualifications prescribed as per the RBI Grade B eligibility 2022 are pretty tough. Even tougher than UPSC and other major government exams.
RBI Grade B Selection Procedure 2022
Selection Process for RBI Grade B (General) consists of the following 3 Phases:
-
Preliminary Exam (Phase 1)
-
Mains Exam (Phase 2)
-
Interview (Phase 3)
One needs to clear all the three Phases to be selected for the post of Grade ‘B’ Officer.
So, to elaborate a bit on what I have written above, the Prelims exam is basically an elimination round. Out of the Tens of thousands that appear for this exam, only a few thousands are able to get selected to appear for the next phase or the Mains.
Those that qualify for the Mains exam appear for it roughly a few weeks after the Prelims. Now the Mains exam is one of the phases meant for the selection of the top-scoring candidates. In this exam, every candidate that scores above the cut-off marks is allocated a score.
Those with the highest scores in the Mains are then selected for the final phase or the Interview round. This phase too, like with the Mains, is meant for the selection of the highest-scoring candidates.
Here too the candidates are scored according to their respective performances.
After the interview round is over, the final list of the selected RBI Grade B candidates is prepared. This list is prepared considering the combined scores of those with the highest marks in both, the Mains, and the Interview round.
The candidates that find their names on the final list are eventually the ones that get to train as RBI Grade B officers.
